An interesting part of our community history is the story of Buckley Petawabano and his casting as Pete Gawa in the show Rainbow Country. The show ran for 26 episodes and was a popular Canadian television show. The show was filmed in 1969 around Whitefish Falls, which is near Espanola, Ontario, Canada. Many scenes were also shot at Birch Island and on Manitoulin Island.
Buckley Petawabano is a resident of Mistissini, and was cast in the show as Pete Gawa, a guide and friend of Billy of Ojibwa origin. After the shows completion, Buckley returned to Mistissini as a local celebrity and was one of the main people responsible for starting the local radio station. His contribution to telecommunications was important in bringing Cree language content onto a broadcasting platform.
