The Municipal Services Department would like to provide community members with an update regarding the ongoing work and efforts being made to address the community’s drinking water.
We are aware of the concerns many members have regarding this issue, and we want to assure the community that steps are being taken to review and improve the drinking water.
Back in July 2025, was when the bacterial contamination was first detected in the community’s water supply, the Municipal Services Department began working closely with the Cree Nation Government and the Cree Health Board. As an initial measure, the department carried out flushing of the water network to improve water quality. Following this, engineers stepped in to assist with further assessments and explore possible solutions. One recommendation that has emerged from these assessments is the chlorination of the water supply.
Because our water network is extensive and is over 45 plus kilometres, the work required takes time to complete properly. Improvements and studies must follow a careful process to ensure the long-term safety and quality of the water supply.
A Water Filling Station was completed and has been operating since December 2025, providing residents with an additional option for accessing clean water while work on the water system continues.
Several organizations are currently supporting this work, including the Municipal Services Department, Cree Nation Government, Cree Health Board (Public Health) and an Engineering firm.
To keep the community informed, the following updates and engagement opportunities are scheduled:
• March 16, 2026: Presentation to Council by the Municipal Department
• March 17, 2026: Update to be shared on local radio
• March 18, 2026: Municipal Services Department will host a booth during the Housing Information Sessions to provide information and answer questions regarding our water.
We would also like to reassure community members that we are doing our very best to address this issue. Our teams continue to work closely with professionals and partner organizations to find the best and safest solutions for our community. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as this process moves forward.
